Glorious Imperfection by Kim Clayton

The VMC Sneak Peek is quickly approaching - August 26 - and I'm excited and nervous all at once. Excited because all of us involved are ready to get underway; to christen the ship and see where she sails. Nervous, because the perfectionist part of me realizes that not everything will look or be done before Monday.

That's why I'm so glad we decided to call this a "Sneak Peek" and not an "Open House". Open House implies that we are prepared, that we have all our ducks in a row. Which isn't quite the case. Our ducks are hiding between paint cans, sneaking out the back door, and stubbornly avoiding the row-making process.

A Sneak Peek, however, is like flinging wide the doors to welcome you into the midst of the process. A Sneak Peek says, "Come and see where we're at, in this moment." Which is a bit messy, incomplete, disheveled.

So yes, there's still work to be done, but if we waited until things were perfect, we would perhaps never open our doors. God understands this completely. Just look at Romans 5:8.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Notice the second part of the verse "While we were still sinners..." While we were still a mess, an incomplete project. That speaks volumes. If God had waited until we got our act together, we would still be waiting for a reason to celebrate Christmas and Easter. But instead, "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us..." God flung wide the doors and sent His Son into our muddled chaos to show us love. A sneak peek, if you will, of perfection.

We hope you'll stop in on Monday and see us in our glorious imperfection. A lot of hands have worked many hours, a lot of prayers have been lifted to bring us to where we are currently. What you won't see is a project completely done. But what you will see are people completely undone in their eagerness for this adventure.
